President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a strong, efficient, and functional surgical care system across Ghana.
Addressing participants at the 66th Annual Conference of the West African Association of Surgeons on Monday, February 9, President Mahama outlined plans to enhance blood supply systems, improve referral networks, and expand access to surgical services, particularly in underserved communities.
He stressed that capacity building in surgery must go beyond training more surgeons, noting that a comprehensive approach is essential to ensuring safe and effective surgical care.
“Capacity building in surgery is both timely and compelling, and it must be understood comprehensively,” he said. “It is not only about producing more surgeons, but also about strengthening the teams and systems that support safe surgery, including anaesthesia, nursing, diagnostics, and other critical services.”
President Mahama also highlighted the importance of strong governance in the health sector, assuring stakeholders of the government’s readiness to act on expert recommendations.
“We remain committed to strengthening these foundations. Government will carefully study the recommendations from this conference and collaborate with stakeholders to implement those that require immediate attention,” he added.
As part of broader health sector reforms, the President further pledged sustainable financing for surgical care, reinforcing his administration’s long-term goal of making safe, accessible surgical services available to all Ghanaians.
