Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama, in his maiden State of the Nation Address, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to social inclusion, infrastructure development, and economic stability.
He announced that the government would collaborate with key stakeholders to implement an Affirmative Action Law, aimed at promoting gender equality and greater representation of marginalized groups in leadership and decision-making roles.
The proposed legislation is expected to address long-standing disparities and create opportunities for women and other underrepresented communities.
President Mahama also assured Ghanaians that his government remains committed to supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs). “Our commitment to people with disabilities remains strong,” he emphasized, highlighting the need for inclusive policies that ensure equal access to education, employment, and social services.
Shifting focus to infrastructure, the President revealed that Ghana’s road-related debt has reached a staggering GH¢105 billion, posing significant financial challenges for the sector. While acknowledging the urgency of addressing the debt burden, he assured Ghanaians that the government would explore sustainable solutions to improve road networks across the country.
In a move to diversify Ghana’s transport system, President Mahama announced that the government would commission a feasibility study into water transport. The initiative aims to explore the potential of Ghana’s rivers and coastal areas for transportation, reducing pressure on the country’s road networks and providing alternative means of travel and trade.
As Ghana faces pressing economic and infrastructure challenges, the government’s commitments signal a strategic approach to balancing social equity with sustainable development. Stakeholders and citizens now await further details on the implementation of these policies.
