John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has slammed President Nana Akufo-Addo for unveiling a statue of himself near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi.
The statue was revealed on November 6 as part of Akufo-Addo’s one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region, but ended up sparking controversy and public debate.
Mahama’s criticism centers around the statue’s perceived self-aggrandizement, suggesting it’s more about Akufo-Addo’s ego than genuine recognition of his accomplishments.
The Western Regional Minister countered that the statue honors the President’s contributions to the region, including the rehabilitation of Effia Nkwanta Hospital and construction of the Sinohydro interchange.
However, Mahama remains unconvinced, questioning the need for Akufo-Addo to commission a statue of himself while still in office. He argued that true leaders allow their work to speak for itself, rather than seeking self-praise.
Mahama argues that the statue’s installation reeks of self-aggrandizement rather than genuine recognition of achievements. According to Mahama, the statue’s purpose seems more focused on Akufo-Addo’s personal legacy than celebrating meaningful regional contributions.
He stated “Trial and error normally turns into failure, Akufo-Addo said we should try him, we tried him and he failed. As if he cares. He went to Takoradi to commission a statue of him, have you heard this before? As a leader, you need people to say good things about your work and not the other way around.”
“He convinced all universities to confer on him a doctorate degree when he was already in power. How? I don’t know where he’s taking those doctorates. You have to end your tenure for the universities to rather confer the awards on you depending on your accomplishments.” He stated.
