Former President John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), brought his campaign to Kyebi, the hometown of President Nana Akufo-Addo, in the Abuakwa South constituency of the Eastern Region on Monday evening.
Mahama urged residents to rally behind the NDC in the 2024 elections to end the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) reign and “chase the elephant into the Atewa Forest.”
During his address, Mahama pointed out what he described as numerous unfulfilled promises by the NPP government, including the pledge to provide one million dollars annually to each constituency for development projects.
Mahama expressed surprise that even the President’s home constituency, Abuakwa South, did not benefit from this initiative despite the NPP’s campaign promise in 2016.
According to Mahama, the unfulfilled promise has left many constituencies, including Abuakwa South facing a range of developmental challenges, such as inadequate potable water, poor roads, and insufficient school infrastructure.
He urged Ghanaians to learn from what he characterized as the NPP’s deceit and avoid being swayed by “lofty and unrealistic promises” in the upcoming elections.
On health, Mahama pledged that an NDC government would remove the cap placed on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by the NPP. This move, he explained, would ensure the scheme becomes more effective in addressing the health needs of Ghanaians.
He also promised free primary health care for all Ghanaians in his next government.
The former President also criticized the NPP’s economic management, pointing to the increase in Ghana’s debt from 120 billion cedis to 767 billion cedis within an eight-year period as evidence of economic mismanagement.
