Belgian international and Manchester City winger Jeremy Baffour Doku has paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, during his off-season stay in the country.
The visit, held in Accra, was aimed at reaffirming Doku’s Ghanaian heritage and expressing his commitment to supporting charitable and sporting initiatives across the country. The 23-year-old footballer was accompanied by his father, Mr. Davies Doku, and other family members.
“I cannot shine unless people put me on,” Doku said. “I’m proud of my Ghanaian roots. I speak Twi, and I intend to come back more often to give back.”
The Minister warmly welcomed the Doku family, describing Jeremy as a global ambassador of Ghanaian excellence.
“Ghana may not field you in our national jersey, but every time you step on the pitch, Ghana is mentioned,” Hon. Adams said. “Your humility and discipline make you a powerful role model for our youth. The Ministry is ready to support any initiative you wish to pursue here.”
Mr. Adams also reflected on the need for stronger local scouting and talent development systems, acknowledging that Ghana has missed out on nurturing world-class talents like Doku at an early stage.
“Sometimes we blame ourselves for not discovering such talent early enough,” he admitted. “Your success story challenges us to invest more in nurturing the potential right here at home.”
The delegation was led by Lady Dentaa Amoateng MBE, who revealed that Doku had already made private visits to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Achimota Hospital, where he offered support to patients and staff.
She noted that the player is keen to expand his philanthropic work across Ghana during future visits.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of souvenirs and an invitation for Doku to participate in upcoming youth football clinics organised by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Both parties expressed optimism that the partnership would inspire young athletes in Ghana and strengthen the connection between Ghanaian diaspora players and the local sports community.
