Nkurakan, Eastern Region – A young man in his mid-thirties, identified as Moses and popularly known by the nickname “Helloooooo My name is Moses,” has died after reportedly jumping into a deep community well in Nkurakan, located in the Yilo Krobo municipality of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
Moses was once known as a bright student at Nkurakan Presby School and later became a farmer.
He was also active in local politics, serving as a polling station executive for the New Patriotic Party, though he lost his re-election bid.
Recently, however, he struggled with alcohol addiction, often seen intoxicated but engaging in insightful discussions about politics and governance.
This tragic incident comes just days after attempted suicide was officially decriminalized in Ghana. The Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, notified judges that people who attempt suicide will no longer be prosecuted. The directive, circulated on October 18, 2024, highlighted amendments to Section 57 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and Section 95 of the Mental Health Act, 2012 (Act 946), under the Criminal Offences Amendment Act, 2023 (Act 1092).
The Mental Health Authority reports a concerning rise in suicide cases across the country, recording 81 completed suicides and 543 attempted cases in the first half of 2024. This marks an increase from 2023, when 48 completed and 594 attempted cases were reported. Most incidents involve young people aged 15 to 30, with Greater Accra seeing the highest number of completed suicides, while attempted cases are prevalent in the Eastern and Central Regions.
The community of Nkurakan is mourning the loss of Moses, remembered by many for his intellect and political passion, despite the challenges he faced.
