A resident of Suhum in the Eastern Region was shocked Tuesday, April 20, 2021, when a man in a handcuff was seen walking on the street of Suhum township.
The man believed to be in his 40’s was sighted with amazement by residents walking in handcuffs and relatively well dressed.
Residents believe the man could be among 1,800 Nigeria jail breakers escaping from the country.
“The man could be one of the Nigeria Jail breakers or he might have escaped Police arrest somewhere but from the look of things he seems to be a stranger because if he was Ghanaian he would have been passing through villages and bush to hide,” a resident said.
A local Journalist Kofi Michel, who witnessed the incident, said nobody could get closer to the suspect but there was no Police officer to arrest him for interrogation at the time he left the scene.
Ghana Police arrested nine Nigeria jail breakers last week who attempted to cross into the country.
The Comptroller General of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Kwame Asuah Takyi had earlier sent wireless messages to immigration officers on Ghanaian borders to be vigilante and intensify security as the recent Nigerian jail breakers could head to Ghana to hide.
More than 1,800 inmates of a prison in southern Nigeria escaped this week after heavily armed men attacked the facility in the early hours of the morning, prison authorities said on Monday.
The attackers used explosives to make their way into the Owerri prison in the state of Imo before starting a gun battle with prison guards, the national corrections authority.
Other government buildings in the town of Owerri also came under attack at the same time.
According to the Comptroller General of GIS, Ghana could be an attractive destination to the fugitives hence the need to tighten security.
