The Diabetes and Hypertension Clinic of the Eastern Regional Hospital marked world diabetes day with great joy, as the Clinic embarked on a free screening exercise at the main Koforidua taxi station.
The taxi drivers, passengers and traders in the catchment area were excited about the Clinic’s presence and took advantage of it to check their glucose levels, and blood pressure and enquire more about the disease.
Those with abnormal recordings were immediately referred to the Hospital for further investigation and better management.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, it is estimated that about 1 in 2 adults (44%), ie 24 million people affected with diabetes remain undiagnosed.
The majority of these suffer from type 2 diabetes, which can be prevented with few lifestyle changes and healthy dietary habits.
The Clinic with the support of the Management of the Hospital will continue public education across the New Juaben Traditional Area and use every platform available to drum home the existence of this disease and how to manage it.
