The Management of Metro Mass Transit Limited have embarked on a familiarization tour of the company’s operations in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, as part of efforts to assess challenges confronting the public transport service provider.
The visit formed part of a nationwide tour by the new management team to interact with staff and inspect facilities. Mr. Cezar Kale Esq. Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit was accompanied by his Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations and Technical, Haruon Apaw-Wiredu, and other top management members.
During the visit, the MD inspected the Koforidua bus terminal and later held a meeting with workers at the company’s depot. Addressing the staff, Cezar Kale admitted that Metro Mass Transit is facing serious operational challenges, with its active fleet drastically reduced, affecting revenue mobilization.
He disclosed that management has secured plans to procure 1,000 new buses — including electric buses, minibuses, and cargo vehicles — to restore the company’s operations. The procurement will be executed in two phases, with an initial 500 buses expected to arrive soon.
Mr. Kale further announced that over 200 obsolete buses will be scrapped as part of efforts to modernize the company’s fleet. Currently, only between 120 and 130 buses operate daily across the country.
The Managing Director assured workers of improved conditions of service, timely promotions, an enhanced staff welfare scheme, insurance packages, and improved security measures.
On his part, Deputy Managing Director Haruon Apaw-Wiredu expressed concern about the poor performance of the Eastern Regional branch, which currently operates with only four buses. He pledged that the company would soon be repositioned to meet modern operational standards, with improved facilities and human resources.
The visit forms part of management’s strategic measures to reposition Metro Mass Transit as a leading and efficient public transport service provider in Ghana.
