The Weija Divisional Police Command has begun investigations into the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl, Celestine Adonteng, who was allegedly assaulted by her father at Kokrobite in Accra.
The police announced the development in a statement issued on Thursday, November 20.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, 54-year-old mason Isaac Adonteng, severely beat the girl with a cane, a metal pipe, and other objects after accusing her of eating food meant for her younger sibling.
Despite the girl sustaining serious injuries, the suspect reportedly failed to seek medical attention and instead locked her in a room.
Police officers, acting on a complaint, visited the house and found the child unconscious. She was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police retrieved a cutlass and a metal pipe from the scene, items believed to have been used during the assault.
The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned parents and guardians against the use of excessive force in disciplining children, emphasizing that such actions are criminal and can lead to tragic outcomes. The Command also urged the public to report all incidents of child abuse and domestic violence promptly to help protect vulnerable individuals.
