April 7, 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide which killed 800,000 people. The three-month killing spree in 1994 by Hutu extremists targeted ethnic Tutsis, but moderate Hutus were also caught in the wave of violence that followed the fatal downing of a plane carrying Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana. The UN Human Rights Commission says a mass grave with 87 bodies has been discovered in Sudan’s West Darfur region.
According to Commissioner Volker Türk, the killings were carried out by RSF soldiers and their militia allies.
Locals were reportedly forced to dispose of the bodies in the mass grave, effectively denying the victims a decent burial in one of the city’s established cemeteries.
The ongoing fighting in Sudan has displaced almost 2.6 million people and has left thousands dead.
