Today, May 9, 2022, is exactly twenty-one years since the disaster occurred in Ghana’s sports world as many football supporters lost their lives at the Accra Sports stadium.
Soccer fans numbering 127 lost their lives in a stampede during a clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko on May 9, 2001, regarded as the worst stadium disaster in the history of Ghana football.
The lives were lost after Hearts scored two late goals to pip their bitter rivals Kotoko 2-1 in a Ghana Premier League mid-week tie that made disappointed Kotoko fans throw plastic seats and bottles onto the pitch.
The response to the crowd disturbance by the police was to fire tear gas into the crowd, resulting in a stampede which led to the deaths from compressive asphyxia of 127 people.
Meanwhile, some victims are yet to even receive support from the government despite a recommendation made to the government.
