A 20-year-old mechanic, Akwasi Agyemang, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labor by the Bekwai Circuit Court in Ashanti Region for robbing and raping a pregnant WASSCE candidate.
The Prosecutor Detective Chief inspector Eric Twum said, the victim, an eight-month-pregnant 20-year-old student of Bekwai SDA Senior High School, was attacked on August 25, 2024, in her home at Asanso, within the Bekwai Municipality.
Akwasi Agyemang broke into her room around midnight, threatened her with a kitchen knife, and demanded her belongings.
He robbed her of an iPhone 7 valued at GHC 1,400 and an Itel phone worth GHC 1,000 before proceeding to rape her.
The victim’s cries for help alerted the local Assembly member and community members, who quickly mobilized and pursued and arrested the Akwasi Agyemang.
A search of the suspect revealed the stolen items and the weapon used in the attack.
Following a police investigation, Agyemang was charged with robbery and rape.
The court subsequently convicted him, handing down the 25-year sentence.
