Bismark Mborchie, a passionate Visual Arts tutor at Benkum Senior High School, is transforming lives by using art as a tool to equip students with practical business skills, empowering them to confront poverty and unemployment.
With a background in painting and a degree in Arts and Education from the University of Education, he believes in the power of visual arts to instill confidence, skills, and career opportunities in his students.
Mborchie’s initiatives recently gained national attention for his campaign promoting road safety through impactful paintings.
This campaign aimed to create lasting visual reminders about the dangers of reckless driving, contributing to public awareness.
Concerned with Ghana’s theory-heavy education system, which often leaves graduates without practical skills, Mborchie has established a platform to help students understand the economic potential of visual arts.
He stated that his program is not only about teaching art but also about fostering entrepreneurial skills to enable students to make a living from their talent, particularly for those unable to proceed to tertiary education.
Mborchie advocates for a shift in how visual arts are perceived and taught in Ghana.
He notes, “Visual art is everywhere, integral to our daily lives. Parents and individuals shouldn’t underestimate its value.” He sees art as a “firsthand job opportunity,” addressing rising youth unemployment by giving students skills that can lead to immediate income.
He encourages parents and the public to recognize the potential of visual arts, stating, “Art is life, and everything about us is art.”
His program fosters skill development, mental growth, and physical discipline, focusing on creating opportunities for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Visual Arts Department at Benkum SHS is not only a place for artistic expression but also a center for preparing students for life beyond school.
Recently the department embarked on exhibition showcasing beautiful inspiring paintings by students under supervision of Bismark Mborchie.
With aspirations to showcase student works globally, Mborchie is driven to elevate visual arts in Ghana to an international level, offering his students a platform to achieve professional status in the art world.
His work demonstrates the transformative impact of arts in education, showing that creativity can be a powerful agent for social change and poverty reduction.
