Minister of finance, Ken Ofori Atta has declared that Ghanaians have enjoyed a stable and affordable power system since the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assumed his office in 2017.
According to him, “Dumsor”, a popular term which was used by Ghanaians during the reign of former President Mahama, is a thing of the past.
He went on and affirmed that the power supply system in Ghana was unstable at the time the president assumed power, and the popular “Dumsor” terminology has been “relegated”
He made this known during his review on the 2020 mid-year budget on Thursday, July 23, 2020, that the government has spent 4.7 billion in their quest to provide a stable light and power for the citizens of Ghanaians.
“We have relegated ‘Dumsor’ to the past. It is clear to our fellow Ghanaians by now that we have enjoyed 3 and half years of reliable and cheaper power. We have spent more than 4.7 billion in capacity payments not only to ensure that we keep the lights on but also to pay for power we do not use under very questionable contractual obligations we inherited”, he said.
This is not the first time the government has claimed success in ensuring consistent power supply.
The president also made the same statement in February that ‘Dumsor’ is indeed a thing of the past. He explained that there are still debts in the energy sector that has to be paid because of some contractual terms the Former President put the country in.
The government believes that they are the messiahs who have delivered Ghanaians from the hands of unstable power ever since they assumed the office in 2017.
