The Ghana Police Service has told Harriet Thompson, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, to mind her own business after she exhibited an interest in the case of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry movement.
Ms Thompson’s behaviour was unprofessional, according to a statement signed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, and aims to undermine the credibility of the Ghana Police Service.
The “tweet is a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961, which prohibits diplomatic missions from interfering in the domestic affairs of their host country,” according to the IGP.
The statement went on to say that all of their interactions with the #FixTheCountry activist followed the country’s highest laws and that the Commissioner’s remark was “clearly made from either a prejudiced or uneducated stance.”
The IGP’s remark follows a tweet from Madam Thompson, who stated that she “would be interesting to see where this (the arrest) goes.”
“Oliver Barker Vormawor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, arrested again, I understand, for a motoring offence on his way to court,” the British High Commissioner tweeted on May 17. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.”
