The Minerals Commission has called on all miners across the country to renew their licences before 2026 to ensure they operate legally. According to the Commission, every miner must visit its offices to renew their licence to continue their mining activities.
Speaking on Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show, the Communication Director of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Dela Edem, emphasized that from 2026 onwards, any miner who fails to renew their licence or does not perform their work in accordance with regulations will be considered an illegal miner. Such individuals risk having their licences revoked.
Mr. Edem noted that in the past, it was difficult to take a firm stand on illegal mining issues, but things have now changed. “We have a Minister and a President who are determined to leave a lasting legacy. They want all of us to do the right thing and protect our water bodies,” he stated.
He further cautioned miners engaged in panning activities in the River Pra and other water bodies to ensure they possess valid licences, stressing that operating without one is a serious offence.
During the show on Friday, Mr. Edem revealed that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked 278 mining licences as part of efforts to sanitize the sector. He explained that the proper procedure is for miners to acquire a five-year licence and renew it annually to avoid any legal complications.
