Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, accompanied by the Regional Director of Ghana Education Service and the leadership of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, has extended condolences to Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTECH) following a fatal bus crash.
The accident resulted in the death of a kitchen staff member and multiple injuries among other staff members.
The accident occurred on Saturday morning when the school bus, transporting about 50 staff members to Akwamufie for a colleague’s wife’s funeral, crashed.
The driver lost control of the steering wheel while descending a sharp curve on the Aseseeso to Somanya road.
According to surviving victim Prince Appiah, the driver was speeding and lost control at the curve. However, he managed to prevent the bus from plunging into a deep hole, which would have resulted in a more severe disaster.
On Monday morning, Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong commiserated with the staff, students, and the bereaved family. He and his entourage also visited six victims who are still receiving treatment at the Eastern Regional Hospital.
The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ivy Owusu Asantewaa, described the accident as unfortunate. She noted that capacity-building programs are continuously held for drivers and other staff to minimize such crashes.
