The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has tasked the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to give him a comprehensive briefing on the quality of mobile network services across the country.
He further directed them to convene a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to urgently address persistent service quality challenges, particularly in the Volta Region and other underserved areas nationwide.
This followed a request from a resident in the Volta Region on the poor quality of Mobile Telecommunications services.
Hon. George expressed deep concern over the reports, stressing that reliable digital connectivity is fundamental to national development and must be accessible to all Ghanaians.
“Access to reliable mobile connectivity is a right, not a privilege”, the Minister said. “We must take decisive action to ensure that no region is left behind in our digitalisation drive. I expect to meet with all the CEOs of the network operators soon to demand accountability and concrete timelines for resolution”.
The Director-General of NCA, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko in its response, acknowledged the concerns and indicated that improving coverage and service quality in underserved communities is a regulatory priority.
He added that measures are being implemented to intensify monitoring of telcos’ compliance with licensing obligations and that enforcement actions would be taken where necessary.
The Ministry’s intervention marks a renewed effort to ensure equity in access to digital services and to drive Ghana’s digital transformation agenda through strong regulatory oversight and collaborative stakeholder engagement.
