The Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has addressed the press regarding a recent incident at Ridge Hospital, where health professionals were physically attacked.
The Minister condemned the attack and emphasized that nobody, regardless of their status in society, has the right to attack health professionals in Ghana.
The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the health sector, including initiatives such as free primary healthcare, prompt payment of National Health Insurance claims, and retraining health facilities.
The government is also working to employ health professionals who have completed school and are currently sitting at home.
The Minister mentioned that the government has established a national rapid response team, as well as regular and district rapid response teams, to respond to health outbreaks.
The government is also integrating vaccines into its response mechanisms.
The Minister announced that the government is looking at introducing specialist programs to make health professionals more attractive on the global market.
A committee has been constituted to look into the post-basic specialist program, including representatives from the Ghana Nurses and Midwives College and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
The Minister constituted a committee to investigate the incident at Ridge Hospital, which includes a lawyer, a nurse, a medical doctor, an auditor, and an HR person.
The committee will look into the matter and make recommendations for implementation.
The Minister condemned the physical attack on health professionals and emphasized that such incidents will not be tolerated.
The government will take all necessary measures to ensure that health professionals are safe and protected while working at health facilities.
