The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has called on residents of Kroboland to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7 elections to ensure continued development in the area.
“The appreciation you can show is to ensure that if what the government is doing is good, you urge it on to do more by voting for the NPP to remain in power,” Mr. Korsah said.
Speaking at the commissioning of 188 lockable stores at the Agormanya Market in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Eastern Region, on Monday, November 24, 2024, the Minister said the stores, funded under the World Bank-supported Secondary Cities Support Program, aim to boost the local economy and improve infrastructure.
He stressed on government’s commitment to providing infrastructure to reduce urban migration by making life comfortable in semi-urban areas like Lower Manya Krobo.
“The Akufo-Addo government recognizes the movement of people from rural areas to urban centers. Initiatives like these are designed to make life easier for residents and businesses, ensuring that such migration is reduced,” he explained.
Defending the government’s borrowing, the Minister said projects like the Lockable stores in Agormanya reflect how borrowed funds are used to transform communities.
“When questions arise about government borrowing, these projects should be seen as evidence of how the funds are utilized for transformation. What is important is to ensure these facilities are well managed and put to good use,” he added.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Lower Manya Krobo, Simon Kwaku Tetteh, who is also the NPP parliamentary candidate, assured residents that the facility would provide secure storage for traders and boost the local economy.
Some traders expressed relief over the provision of the lockable stores, noting that they would now have a safe place to store their goods.
Divisional Chief of Djebian, Nene Agbau Narh IV, commended the government for the initiative but called for additional investments in agro-processing facilities.
“We are grateful for this development, but I appeal to the government to establish mango and tomato processing factories in this area. This will add value to our produce and boost our local economy,” the chief said.
The lockable stores project is part of a $245 million Urban Development Grant (UDG) from the World Bank, which supports markets, roads, and drainage systems across 35 municipalities in Ghana.
