A member of the appointment committee asked John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Regional Minister-Designate for the Oti Region, an unexpected question on January 23, 2025, which led to an interesting discussion regarding leadership, age, and political contribution.
The committee member inquired, apparently worried about Gyapong’s advanced age and lengthy career:
“At 74 years old and a father of ten, why have you held so many influential positions, including serving as a three-time parliamentarian, regional chairman for the NDC in both the Oti and Volta regions, and as constituency chairman? Isn’t it time for you to pass the baton to your children?”
Some were taken aback by the question, but Gyapong’s response was composed, assured, and based on his strong loyalty to his nation and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.
He started by comparing himself to President Nana Akufo-Addo, who held the office until he was well into his seventies, saying, “If Nana Akufo-Addo can serve as president at the age of 72 and leave office at 80, there is no reason I cannot continue to serve the people of Ghana.”
Gyapong went on to discuss his long tenure with the NDC. He underlined, “I am a founding member of the NDC party.”
“I’ve spent decades serving and supporting the party’s growth, and I am still passionate about seeing it succeed. My age doesn’t limit my ability to contribute, especially when the country and the party need experienced leadership during these critical times.”
Drawing from his extensive background, Gyapong clarified that although younger generations contribute new ideas and vitality, seasoned politicians like himself offer priceless insight and a thorough comprehension of the political landscape of the country. He stayed steadfast in his resolve to support the NDC’s success in upcoming elections.
“I am determined to contribute my expertise for the benefit of both the party and the nation,” he added. “I believe my work is far from over, and there is still so much I can do to support Ghana’s development.”
