The Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has said that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) proposed 24-hour economy is a revolutionary concept that seeks to raise productivity, create jobs, and improve the standard of life for Ghana’s workforce.
Pelpuo gave a speech during his parliamentary vetting on Thursday, January 30, outlining his vision for how the policy would transform Ghana’s labor market, specifically by addressing youth unemployment and raising worker wages.
The NDC and former President John Dramani Mahama support the 24-hour economy, which aims to expand economic activity beyond the traditional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday. In order to ensure round-the-clock economic operations, the policy framework suggests implementing a three-shift working structure across many industries.
According to Pelpuo, putting this idea into practice will maximize labor efficiency and use Ghana’s workforce to boost output.
He emphasized that the initiative’s goals go beyond simply extending working hours and include making sure employees are fairly compensated for their labor.
“The 24-hour economy is a policy by President John Dramani Mahama proposed to the people of Ghana and it is a commitment to ensure that we engage the Ghanaian worker effectively and to ensure that the 24-hour working arrangement that we have is improved.
“The whole commitment is to increase production by our working class and also earn what they deserve.”
