The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Minister of Health to take immediate action to contain a worsening cholera outbreak in the Effutu Municipality.
In a formal letter addressed to the Health Minister, Hon. Afenyo-Markin highlighted the severity of the situation, revealing that suspected cholera cases have risen to 412.
The outbreak has affected key health facilities, including Winneba Municipal Hospital, Winneba Health Centre, and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Clinic. So far, three deaths have been recorded, with most cases emerging from coastal areas, prompting urgent intervention efforts.
The Minority leader emphasized the strain the outbreak has placed on local health facilities and personnel, calling for financial support to cover operational expenses such as fuel, sanitation efforts, and the procurement of essential medical supplies and treatment kits.
He also stressed the need for logistical support to enhance health education and public awareness campaigns to prevent further spread.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin urged the Ministry of Health to provide immediate assistance to the Effutu Municipal Health Directorate to prevent the outbreak from escalating further.
He expressed hope for a swift response to address the growing public health crisis.
