The Department of Children (DoC) under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP), held its first and second Quarter National Child Protection Committee meetings for 2023 on Thursday July 13th 2023 in Accra.
The meeting’s purpose was to discuss and consult members on the Optional Protocols on the Sales of Children, Child Prostitution, and Child Pornography (OPSC), as well as to brief members of the Child Protection in Emergency Working Group.
The OPSC also sought to strengthen Ghana’s commitment to addressing child sales, child prostitution, and child pornography in all forms through appropriate legal, political, and social measures to protect children.
In a statement read on behalf of the the Chief Director for MoGCSP – Dr. Afisah Zakariah , the Ag. Director of the Department of Children, Mrs Florence Ayisi Quartey noted that the committee will rectify the OPSC to strengthen the legal framework of the country in combating the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.
“This will provide an enhanced international cooperation in addressing the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography” she added.
The optional protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and Child pornography (OPSC) was adopted on 25th May 2000 at the 54th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. It came into force on 18th January.
Ghana signed the OPSC in 2003 and is currently seeking to ratify it.
The meeting featured presentations on topics originating from the Regional Child Protection Committee (RCPC), among others.
