The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has noted that the Monetisation of Elections in Ghana can only stop if the Electoral Commission is financed adequately.
According to him, the EC, if given the needed budget can fund political parties candidates for parliamentary and presidential elections to cut costs involved in election by candidates and the party.
Speaking at a durbar to mark the 38th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution in Winneba, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah revealed that the amount charged by the Electoral Commission from political parties internal elections are normally huge and attributed that charges as one of the causes of Monetisation of Elections in Ghana.
The celebration was on the theme, “Monetisation of Elections in Ghana: ‘A threat to National Development and Genuine Democracy’.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah however proposed for free filing fee for all candidates in all national elections and abolition of political party internal election charges by EC.
The NDC general secretary advocated for continues deliberations on monetization in politics and election to strengthen democracy and save money for developmental projects in the Country.
