The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, accusing him of attempting to cover up damning revelations contained in a galamsey (illegal mining) report by former Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Prof. Frimpong Boateng.
In a press conference held on October 16, 2023 dubbed “Moment of Truth” the NDC raised concerns about what they described as a “poor attempt” by the Attorney-General to downplay the complicity of officials in the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in illegal mining activities.
The NDC refuted the Attorney-General’s claim that there was no evidence to support the allegations made in the Frimpong Boateng galamsey report. The party pointed to multiple pieces of corroborative evidence in the public domain that align with the report’s findings.
Video Evidence of Illegal Mining
The NDC referenced a video documentary titled “Forest under Siege,” which they claimed contained incontrovertible evidence of illegal mining activities. They specifically mentioned Emmanuel Donald Enstuah’s company, C&J Aleska (now Imperial Heritage Limited), operating illegally in a forest reserve.
Stolen Excavators Scandal
The NDC highlighted the alleged stealing and sale of seized excavators. They argued that Prof. Frimpong Boateng reported the individuals responsible for the missing excavators, including Horace Ekow Ewusi and John Ofori Atta, to the police. They also mentioned the involvement of Seth Mantey, a journalist, who confessed to his role in the scandal.
Illegal Mining by Akonta Mining Limited
The NDC pointed to a statement by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources indicating that Akonta Mining Limited, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, operated illegally in a forest reserve and polluted the Tano river.
The NDC called for the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General and urged the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Adjabeng, to expedite investigations into the matter and prosecute those found culpable.
The party emphasized the importance of holding government officials and party members accountable for their involvement in illegal mining.
