Lorries owned by Mozambicans have been looted and set on fire by protesters in neighbouring South Africa, an association of road transporters in Mozambique says.
The Federation of Road Transport Association (Fematro) says no injuries or fatalities have been reported among their drivers.
The incidents happened in Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal province, and elsewhere in Gauteng province, said Constantino Jotamo, a Fematro director.
“We are looking for more details about what happened,” he said.
Transport operators fear the situation will worsen in the coming days.
“The last few days have been really difficult,” said Rui Muianga, a lorry driver on the Maputo-Johannesburg route.
The crossing between Mozambique and South Africa is usually busy but has been drastically affected – first because of the tightening of Covid-19 restrictions and now because of the riots and looting.
On Tuesday, only three passenger transport cars left from Mozambique for South Africa.
