The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has criticized Pius Enam Hadzide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, over comments he made in a viral video regarding illegal migration.
Addressing the media on Thursday September 12, the MP expressed shock at Hadzide’s remarks, in which he appeared to boast about his role in the 2018 Australia visa fraud scandal and promised to facilitate similar travel for constituents to the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
In the video, Hadzide is heard saying, “If you, Nananom, desire for your children to travel to America to work and send money back home, or if you are a young person eager to explore opportunities abroad, I promise to support you when I become MP.” He went on to state his alleged role in helping individuals obtain visas during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Thomas Ampem Nyarko condemned these comments, calling them reckless and harmful to the youth of Asuogyaman.
He reminded the public of the disgrace Ghana faced in 2018 when over 60 individuals posing as journalists were deported from Australia after being caught in the visa fraud scandal. “We were utterly shocked because when news broke out about this Australia visa fraud, Pius vehemently denied it and was reportedly cleared by the Chief Corruption Clearing Agent, Nana Akufo Addo, only for him to now boldly admit to this crime,” Ampem stated.
The MP raised concerns that Hadzide’s promises to help constituents travel to the U.S. could lead to serious consequences, including potential deportation and future travel bans. “What Pius is embarking on and promising the youth of this constituency is criminal and likely to jeopardize the future of the youth,” Ampem said. “They are likely to be caught, jailed or deported, and banned from traveling to the U.S. for a long time.”
Ampem also questioned Hadzide’s loyalty to the Asuogyaman constituency, citing his previous unsuccessful attempts to become an MP in Ketu North before shifting focus to Asuogyaman. He accused Hadzide of using his alleged wealth to sway voters. “He believes that this ill-gotten wealth can be used to induce the good people of Asuogyaman to elect him, but he is grossly mistaken. The Asuogyaman seat is not for sale,” Ampem declared.
In contrast, Thomas Ampem Nyarko tauted his own contributions to the development of Asuogyaman, listing several projects he had initiated during his tenure, including building schools, clinics, and water projects in various communities. He urged the youth to focus on legitimate opportunities. “You do not have to engage in fraudulent visa deals and corruption to succeed,” he advised.
The MP also called on the youth to trust in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s plans for job creation and development, saying, “There is hope for the youth under the NDC government, and I will remain humble and loyal to the people of Asuogyaman and continue to serve them with integrity.”
