Management of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) for illegal miners led by the National Coordinator, Dr. Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor on 25th October, 2023 hosted Mundo Verde Climate, a company based in Switzerland at its Cantonment Office, Accra.
The meeting formed part of a series of engagements being done by NAELP in its efforts to secure partnerships in carbon credit development by reclaiming and reafforesting degraded lands in order to provide alternative opportunities for the targeted beneficiaries.
Today’s meeting, which was a follow-up of the previous meeting held between the two parties in Nairobi, Kenya, during the recent Africa Climate Summit (ACS) last month, and other online engagements was to learn more about the framework for a potential partnership.
Last month, at ACS Dr. Carol Donkor did a combination of presentations and exhibition, making a business case for carbon sequestration through plantation development on Ghana’s 3 million degraded lands.
The visit of Mundo Verde to NAELP in Accra focused on elaborating due diligence requirements, community benefits, sustainable governance structure and environmental impact assessment.
During the discussion, the Business Development Director at Mundo Verde Climate-Carbon Projects, Can Erenberk, asked for the state of landownership structure to enable easy engagements.
Responding, Dr. Carol Donkor took the team through an elaborate landownership system in Ghana.
Gediz S. Kaya, the Managing Partner of Mundo Verde, also reiterated their interest in natured-based climate solutions partnerships and the accompanying investments they make in communities.
Upon enquiry from Mundo Verde, Dr. Carol Donkor spoke extensively about our lands database which is able to support project development of a minimum of 500,000 hectares. She mentioned the work NAELP has done with geoscientists to make sure a pipeline of projects can be developed from identified lands to benefit from carbon development investments.
Dr. Carol Donkor mentioned the areas NAELP has already undertaken our pilot projects and where further projects may be developed to include Eastern, Western, Western North and Ashanti Regions.
The meeting was very fruitful and positive and ended with high anticipation of possible partnership.
