The Member of Parliament for Ayensuano in the Eastern Region Teddy Safori Addi became a bouncer for the minority Caucus in Parliament during the chaos that broke out in Ghana’s Parliament Monday night over the controversial e-levy bill.
The muscled MP was captured in videos taking advantage of his strength to block attacks on minority Caucus members by some Majority caucus members.
Some social media commentators say the Ayensuano MP stood out during the chaos. However, he is being accused of allegedly slapping the Minister of Sports who is also MP for Yagaba -Kubori Mustapha Yussif.
In some of the videos that captured the chaos, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi was seen blazing with anger and attempted to maneuver to deal with the Ayensuano MP but was unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate and arrest the Member of Parliament who allegedly slashed the sports Minister who is also a lawmaker with an unknown object during chaos in Parliament last night.
Minister Mustapha Yussif who is the MP for Yagaba-Kubori was captured receiving a hefty slap amid the chaos in Parliament Monday night over the controversial e-levy bill.
The Akim Swedru MP claims an unknown person slashed the Yagaba -Kubori MP with an object leading to an injury.
“The security must as a matter of urgency do everything possible and arrest the said MP who slashed the Sports Minister with an unknown sharp object yesterday night during the scuffles among some MPs. The person must be punished severely to serve as a deterrent to the other unruly MPs who are in parliament just for chaos purposes. The security must use the CCTV footage and arrest the person and process him immediately to court. We can disagree on issues and even shout at each other but to slash your colleague in the chamber with an object is enough criminal grounds to be convicted to serve a prison term. I pray the security can identify the person and immediately arrest him” The Akim Swedru MP wrote on Facebook.
The decision by the First Deputy Speaker to take leave of the Speaker’s chair for the Second Deputy Speaker to take charge to enable him to participate in voting despite not taking part of voice vote on the floor of Parliament on e-levy bill occasioned disagreement from the Minority, and a subsequent tussle over the Speaker’s sitting area ensued.
The brawl saw dozens of the opposition parliamentarians exchange fisticuffs with their colleagues on the majority side while some officials of parliament tried to protect the Speaker’s seat and the mace of parliament from being attacked.
The chaos forced Parliament to abruptly adjourn sittings to Tuesday.
The imposition of controversial e-levy which seeks to slap 1.75% tax on electronic transactions including Mobile money has sparked public outrage.
However, while the opposition Party NDC through its Members of Parliament has vowed to reject the levy, the ruling NPP MPs are bent to push it through to be passed.
