The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised exporting unemployed nurses to foreign countries in order to combat unemployment among healthcare professionals.
Mahama contends that sending nurses on assignment overseas would be preferable to keeping them jobless in Ghana.
When Mahama spoke to student nurses on his tour of the Savannah Region, he emphasized the need of finding gainful employment for nurses upon graduation.
He suggested creating a department inside the Ministry of Employment with the sole purpose of hiring nurses who fulfill the necessary requirements for export in order to put this plan into action.
“We want to increase the production of health workers and nurses and we will employ them to work for us as many as we can but at the same time, we will sign agreements with other countries where we can post our nurses to go and work on fixed contracts. So under the Ministry of Employment, we will have a unit that can recruit nurses and make sure they are of the standard that can work in international hospitals.” He promised.
