The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has come under fire from National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama for his recent pledge to generate opportunities for young people, citing the government’s unmet job creation pledges.
Mahama’s comments follow Dr. Bawumia’s promise, should he win the presidency on December 7, to give young employment top priority.
During his Oti Regional visit, Mahama addressed an audience in Kwamikrom, in the Biakoye constituency, and questioned the veracity of Dr. Bawumia’s pledge, pointing to the difficulties experienced by former Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees who are still in arrears on many months’ worth of unpaid allowances.
Emphasizing that meeting present commitments to the youth would reinforce his pledge to create jobs, he encouraged Dr. Bawumia to first resolve the unpaid NABCO bills.
“The governing NPP promised to provide jobs for the NABCO trainees after completion. It has been over three years and that has not happened. The allowances they also promised them during the training have not been paid.
“It is really sad because all attempts by the trainees to have their concerns addressed have been unsuccessful. If indeed Dr. Bawumia is committed to providing jobs for the youth, he should first address their concerns.”
