Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia’s ruling Swapo party has been elected as the country’s first female president.
Nandi-Ndaitwah secured over 57% of the vote.
However, the election faced controversy, with opposition candidate Panduleni Itula alleging malpractice after polling delays and irregularities.
Most opposition parties boycotted the announcement of the results in the capital, Windhoek. Swapo, which has governed Namibia since independence in 1990, called for peace and stability.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, a veteran leader with over 25 years in high office, is expected to bring experience and continuity to the role.
She will become Africa’s second sitting female president, together with Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan.
