Vice Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team Nana Akomea has voiced dissatisfaction with Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kyeremanten over his attack of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Kyerematen’s comments came after Kufuor publicly praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as the most qualified candidate to lead Ghana in the general elections scheduled for 2024. In an interview with reporters on Sunday, November 17, Kufuor made this plea.
The next day, Kyerematen attacked the former president for his endorsement on Oyerepa TV, saying it had unfairly singled Kufuor out and demonized him in the political arena.
In response to these remarks, Nana Akomea explained Kyerematen’s position in an interview on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV.
Given his choice to leave the NPP, he questioned whether Kyerematen had anticipated Kufuor’s support.
He urged political players to stay focused on topics that are important to Ghanaians and reaffirmed the former president’s right to openly back the leader of his party.
“It’s sad that Alan Kyerematen feels that way, who did Alan Kyerematen expect Kufuor to support? He Alan? He’s not a member of NPP. Is he a member of the NPP? If Kufuor goes to support Alan Kyerematen, Kufuor has taken himself out of the NPP. I think in the NPP, currently, Kufuor at one point used to be everybody’s boss, including President Akufo-Addo.
“So, Kufuor is like the old lady in the house, like the Akan people will call ‘Abrewatia’ that is how Kufuor is. The Abrewatia in the party you said he should go and endorse you Alan who is not in the party. You didn’t follow him to stay at that party, you left and he should follow you.
“Between Kufuor and Alan who should follow the other? I heard some of the things he said and it made me sad. At the time Kufuor appointed Alan as US Ambassador and Minster of Trade, there were people in the party who could have taken those appointments.”
The idea that the party is having trouble in its heartland, which is why Kufuor backed Bawumia, was deemed absurd by Nana Akomea.
He claimed that if Kufuor had been active, he would have done a good job of campaigning for the party.
“Isn’t it laughable, Kufuor is not as active as he used to be, I can assure you, if he was active, he would be doing more. Not because of any fear, but because he’s a member of the NPP. And he wants the NPP to succeed and he wants to contribute to that effort. How does anybody read meaning into it?”
