The Eastern Regional edition of the National Apprenticeship Program was officially launched at the Jubilee Park, bringing together government officials, traditional leaders, master craft persons, and young apprentices.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, the Eastern Regional Minister, praised President his excellence John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to youth development.

She recalled how, during the election campaign, she assured the people that the President would prioritize youth employment and skills development.
According to her, the government has not only fulfilled that promise but has exceeded expectations by providing both training opportunities and the needed resources for apprentices.
“This event marks the beginning of a new era in youth development and employment,” she said. “Today, as these young men and women begin their skills development journey under the National Apprenticeship Program, we are shaping a future anchored in hope and prosperity.”

The minister further emphasized that unemployment remains a major social challenge in Ghana, with the youth unemployment rate currently at 14.7%, and joblessness among the youth exceeding 25%. She noted that the lack of employable skills is a major factor contributing to poverty and low productivity. She described the program as part of the government’s vision to equip the youth with practical, market-driven skills to secure their future.
Mr. Fohad Agbenyadzi, National Deputy Coordinator at the National Apprenticeship Program also addressed the gathering. He explained that the program began three days earlier with the training of master craft persons who will, in turn, train the apprentices. The Jubilee Park event served as the official launch and matriculation ceremony for both masters and apprentices.
He highlighted that beneficiaries of the program will not only receive free training and tools but also a monthly stipend of ₵300 to support transportation and feeding. Additionally, apprentices will be covered by workplace insurance to ensure their safety during training.
Traditional leaders from the Eastern Region were also present to encourage the apprentices, urging them to be disciplined, hardworking, and respectful toward their trainers.
Some master craft persons expressed their gratitude to the government, noting that the initiative will relieve parents who cannot afford vocational training for their children. They added that the program will also boost vocational skills development and create more opportunities for trainers themselves.
Apprentices who spoke at the event also thanked the government and the President, promising not to disappoint. They pledged to remain committed to their training, respect their masters, and use the opportunity to build a better future for themselves.

The program, jointly implemented by the National Youth Authority, the Ministry of Youth and Employment, and the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), is expected to significantly reduce youth unemployment and promote sustainable skills development across Ghana.
