Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has harshly criticized the recent National Security officers’ searches on the houses of former government officials, warning that the actions reflect poorly on President John Mahama’s leadership.
There has been significant condemnation of the raids, which targeted the residences of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
According to reports, security guards searched Dr. Addison’s home thoroughly, spoke with residents, and confiscated CCTV equipment.
After the occurrences caused public uproar, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai defended the raids by claiming that they were authorized and conducted legally.
Critics contend that the raids are a part of a larger political scheme to intimidate opposition leaders, therefore this explanation has not been universally accepted.
Afenyo-Markin claimed on his X handle that the government was attacking Ghana’s democracy by deploying state security forces to threaten political rivals.
Afenyo-Markin urged Mahama to act right now to control his agents. He cautioned that such acts could harm Ghana’s democratic credentials and reduce public confidence in state institutions.
“Abusing the Rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy! Ms Shamima Muslim and Dr Justice Srem-Sai should not have been deployed to defend such unlawful actions by the Government! Mr President, you are widely perceived as a moderate, but these acts of abuse of power by your HAWKS which are also defended by your own Deputy Spokesperson and Deputy Attorney General speak very negatively of your leadership. Please reign in your HAWKS now!”
