The Voters Registration exercise in Asuogyaman Constituency of the Eastern Region has been characterized by confusion and altercations as NDC and NPP supporters clash over registering of suspected smuggled applicants.
Some men reportedly brought to the Constituency by the Parliamentary Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party are moving from polling station to another violently preventing people they suspect to be none residents from registering.
Their action has sparked near violence in some polling stations which a gun was reportedly pulled by one of the thugs at New Senchi RC JHS polling station.
The presence of the thugs has created tension in the Constituency. The NDC is threatening to also bring in private guards to protect its agents should the security fail to stop the marauding in the Constituency.
There was near pandemonium at the Adinakope polling station at South Senchi in the Asuogyaman constituency of the Eastern region Friday morning when a group of young men arrived in a pickup vehicle with registration number WR 2589-17 to register but were resisted by the residents since they are not known, according to the Assembly Member for the area Issah Larweh.
Not even the intervention of security personnel drawn to the scene including military and police could calm nerves.
The commotion drew both the MP Thomas Ampem Nyarko and the aspiring Parliamentary Candidate for the NPP Paul Ansah to the scene. Paul Ansah raging with anger verbally assaulted the MP and accused him and the NDC of attempts to register nonresidents from surrounding constituencies particularly Juapong Community adding that the issue had been reported to the Electoral Commission for the necessary redress.
He again alleged that the MP has bribed some of the NPP agents to lose guard for the illegality.
However, in an interview, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Constituency Thomas Ampem Nyarko said the NPP is violently preventing legitimate applicants from registering instead of using the Challenge form as the NDC is doing to challenge persons smuggled to the Constituency by the NPP.
