The Eastern Regional communications team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Eric Obuaba known as Mr Green has cautioned the Abuakwa North Constituency Member of Parliament Honourable Gifty Twum Ampofo to render an unqualified apology to Teachers and all the teacher union under the Ghana Education Service
He said, “Squeeze out my deep disappointment with the recent derogatory comments made by Hon Gifty Twum-Ampofo, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency and Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), regarding the teaching profession in Ghana. These comments, which include blaming teachers for the country’s economic failures and making disrespectful remarks against teachers and teacher unions, are deeply concerning.
It is disheartening to witness the apparent disregard for teachers displayed by the NPP government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo. President Addo’s speech, in which he portrayed teaching as a form of volunteering and discouraged teachers from seeking compensation, is both unacceptable and disheartening. Furthermore, the government has failed to fulfill its commitment of providing a 10% annual increment for teachers.
We cannot ignore the existing challenges faced by the teaching profession in Ghana under Hon Twum-Ampofo’s leadership. Teachers often struggle with low pay, excessive workloads, and inadequate access to resources. These circumstances create a sense of low morale among teachers and impact the quality of education delivered to students. Hon Twum-Ampofo’s comments only serve to exacerbate these difficulties. Teachers already bear the weight of societal and parental expectations in shaping the next generation, and to be undermined by a public official responsible for education is truly disheartening.
Moreover, Hon Twum-Ampofo’s comments have had a severe impact on the reputation of Abuakwa North Constituency. Her derogatory remarks against teachers and teacher unions have portrayed the community in a negative light, causing significant concern as this negative perception could have lasting consequences for the area.
Therefore, I urge Hon Gifty Twum-Ampofo to retract her statements and issue an official and sincere apology to the teachers and teacher unions in Ghana. It is also crucial for her to acknowledge the impact of her words on the image of Abuakwa North Constituency and work towards rectifying any damage that may have already occurred. As a public official entrusted with important responsibilities, it is vital that she upholds professionalism and respect for all stakeholders, especially those in the education sector.
I would like to emphasize that the teaching profession in Ghana is already facing numerous challenges. Teachers are often undervalued, overworked, and lack the necessary resources. These issues contribute to a decline in morale among teachers and ultimately impact the quality of education provided to our students. Hon Twum-Ampofo’s comments only serve to add insult to injury. Teachers already bear immense pressure in shaping the future generation, and to be discredited by a public official in charge of education is a disservice to their efforts.
In conclusion, Hon Gifty Twum-Ampofo’s comments are not only disrespectful to teachers, but also have the potential to damage the education sector and our country as a whole. It is crucial that corrective measures are taken to safeguard the dignity and respect of the teaching profession in Ghana.
