The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has delivered a scathing indictment on the Ghana Police Service’s actions, vehemently contesting Collins Dauda’s alleged involvement in the disturbance at a voter registration center.
“We categorically refute the Ghana Police Service’s assertion of Hon. Collins Dauda’s presence at the Kukuom registration center on May 11th,” stated in a statement signed by Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer for the NDC.
“Hon. Dauda was diligently overseeing the registration process in his constituency, Asutifi South, miles away from the alleged incident.”
The NDC’s rebuttal, released on May 13th, 2024, painted a harrowing picture of the events they claim transpired at the Asunafo South Constituency registration center, implicating individuals purportedly affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in orchestrating violence.
According to eyewitness accounts provided by the NDC, a group of around 40 masked individuals, identified as NPP thugs, descended upon the registration center, instigating chaos and terrorizing prospective NDC voters. “They came in like a storm, wielding intimidation as their weapon,” lamented an eyewitness who requested anonymity.
The altercation, which unfolded from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, witnessed the brutalization of NDC members, including Daniel Arthur, the Assembly Member for the Denyase Electoral Area. “It was a nightmare. We were targeted simply for exercising our democratic right,” remarked Arthur from his hospital bed.
Tensions reached a fever pitch when one of the alleged NPP thugs brandished a firearm, prompting NDC supporters to retaliate in self-defense. “We were under attack, and we had to defend ourselves,” asserted an NDC supporter who narrowly escaped the gunfire.
The NDC underscored the party’s commitment to peaceful participation in the electoral process while condemning what they perceived as the Ghana Police Service’s premature and biased handling of the situation. “We demand transparency and justice,” insisted Gyamfi.
