Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that dreams for power are tearing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party apart.
According to him, the NDC is reportedly divided as key members prepare for the 2028 national elections.
At a news conference on January 26, 2026, Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that dreams for power are tearing the party apart.
“The NDC is divided because of power. Today, Asiedu Nketiah says he is going on a ‘thank you’ tour; now, the Vice President also wants to become president.
“Recently, we heard that she has chosen Haruna Iddrisu as her running mate,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He added, “We have also heard that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, is going to contest, and his running mate is Fifii Kwetey, the NDC General Secretary.”
In a similar development, Afenyo-Markin questioned the government’s assertion that good management and leadership are the reason Ghana’s economy is performing well.
Afenyo-Markin stated that the government should not be primarily responsible for the recent economic improvement during a press conference on Monday, January 26, 2026.
“We have been told that the economy is doing well. That is not in doubt,” he said.
“But the question is, is the economy doing well because there is prudent management, or is it because this government has introduced social intervention programs that have created opportunities for young, ambitious Ghanaians?”
According to him, the Minority believes the current gains did not come from strong policy decisions.
“We hereby submit that the so-called gains were not born out of the government’s competence in managing our economy,” he stated.
He explained that other factors played a bigger role in the recovery.
“Rather, the IMF programme, debt relief, rising commodity exports, and reduced expenditure are the major reasons for the upswing in Ghana’s economy,” Afenyo-Markin said.
