The Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress in Lower West Akyem Constituency, Mr. Benjamin Yamoah and Communication Director for the New Patriotic Party in Upper West Akyem Constituency, Mr. Alex Amoh has backed calls to set Term of office limit to Members of Parliament.
They are also calling for the amendment of the 1992 Constitution to reduce powers of the president and other political appointees who return to seek for another appointment and election to go to Parliament.
Their comments come after the deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party suggested that term limits must be set for Members of Parliament.
According to Nana Obiri Boahen, laws must be made to enable Members of Parliament to serve for a particular term due to the large number of people who seek to contest parliamentary primaries every four years.
“We need as a nation; we must agree that we must have a limit for the members of parliament because it will help us all. If the president is being told after two terms he cannot contest why can’t we set a limit for the MPs also,” Mr. Obiri Boahen in an interview.
Expressing his view on this, Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress in Lower West Akyem Constituency, Mr. Benjamin Yamoah was worried over the decision of formal members of Parliament who are seeking for re-election to return to the chamber.
He was also worried over some Former appointees such as Nana Yaw Osafo Marfo, the Senior Minister who served under President Kufour administration and reappointed again to serve under Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, which he said is blocking the chances of others.
Meanwhile, the Upper West Akyem NPP’s Communication Director, Mr. Alex Amoh is calling for the amendment of the t1992 Constitution to limit specify Members of Parliament term of office and he proposed an 8-year term as the President.
