Ahead of the 2020 General Election, Parliamentary candidates for National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Upper West Akyem Constituency in the Eastern Region yesterday joined farmers in the area at Nyanoa and donated cash and flat-screen televisions to some farmers to show their presence.
Both candidates, after the donations, inspired the farmers and pledged to support them in the area to produce more and create jobs for others.
Mr. Fredrick Obeng Adom who won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary primaries for Upper West Akim Constituency with 266 votes as against current DCE Eugene Sackey who polled 172 votes, Daniel Nartey, eight votes and Maxwell Tinkorang two votes at the farmers day donated 32 inches flat-screen televisions (2) to Best Farmer and best female farmer for 2019 and ¢1000.00 to Agricultural Extension officers in the District.
The NDC’s 2020 candidate who is currently the MP for the Constituency, Hon. Derek Ohene Asifu Bekoe also donated ¢1000.00 and ¢500.00 to Best Farmer and second-best respectively.
The NDC has been occupying the constituency seat since 1992 but the NPP changed its 2012 and 2016 candidate who was seeking for the third time and doubles as DCE, Mr. Eugene Sackey and elected Mr. Fredrick Obeng Adom to lead them into victory in 2020.
In the 2016 election, the NPP’s candidate, Mr. Sackey closed the gap in Parliamentary results from 4,000 to about 400 but the former DCE, Ohene Bekoe was later declared winner by the Electoral commission despite NPP’s attempt to challenge the result in court.
The NPP’s candidate, Mr. Sackey was in April 2017 appointed as DCE to succeed Ohene Bekoe, who won the seat on December 7th, 2016 after serving four years as DCE in the District created in 2012.
