Ahead of the launching of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Manifesto on August 12, George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organizer, has disclosed some key policy initiative aimed at alleviating the financial burden on tertiary students, and creating job opportunities.
The proposed plan involves the Students Loan Trust Fund covering admission fees for qualifying students.
Under this proposal he said, students would need to submit their admission letters and a completed form to the Trust, which will then coordinate with educational institutions for automatic registration of such students.
“Most students when they gain admission into tertiary institutions the first years are always turbulent they get admission but the admission fee is soo much that they are not able to pay. What the NDC is proposing is that when you get your admission letter, go to the students Loan Trust Fund, take your form, fill it then leave a copy of your admission letter with the Trust .They will then write to the school to register you. The loan will go to the school to offset the fee so that the fee problem will not exist so that you can enroll without the stress of having to run around. This is indeed a game changer “said Opare Addo
He said the NDC will expand hostel accommodation infrastructure to resolve the accommodation challenges in various tertiary institutions.
Opare Addo also announced plans to establish a Street Light Authority designed to provide employment and training opportunities for youth in street light maintenance as part of the 24-hour economy.
He also revealed a certification program for master craftsmen and artisans through competence based assessment by the NVTI to boost their professional eligibility for opportunities in local and international companies.
Additionally, the NDC aims to create global internet-based job opportunities for young people in Ghana.
He said this when addressing students of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) after embarking on Hall to Hall campaign during the weekend.
Deputy National Youth Organizer Ruth Seddoh also revealed other aspects of the manifesto, including skill training programs and initiatives for empowering young women.
She said the National Women’s Bank that will be established will provide access to funds for young women entrepreneurs and graduates to start businesses.
The two -day campaign campaign event was climaxed Saturday with “24-hour Economy Walk” in collaboration with New Juaben South Constituency of the party, where NDC supporters gathered in large numbers.
Various speakers, including Deputy National Youth Organizer Osman Abdulai Ayariga, criticized the current government over high level of corruption and misgovornance.
He pledged a vigorous campaign leading up to the December 7 elections which will make the country uncomfortable and ungovernable for the government in power.
Jamal Konney, Richard Etornam Nyarko both Regional Secretary and Youth Organizer respectively called on voters in New Juaben South to vote for the NDC Parliamentary candidate Dr. Martin Otu Offei to end about 20 years of NPP occupancy of the seat which has brought no development to the people.
