The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the New Juaben South Constituency of the Eastern Region has expressed confidence in winning the parliamentary seat for the first time in the 2028 general election.
Constituency Chairman Salassie Amuzu and Youth Organizer Dennis Mensah Akorli, popularly known as Yolex, made the commitment after filing their nominations to seek re-election to their respective positions in the party’s 2026 constituency executive elections.
The two executives said the NDC had made significant gains in the constituency over the years, reducing the party’s electoral deficit against the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
They cited the 2024 presidential results as evidence of the narrowing gap, with Electoral Commission figures showing that the NPP’s presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, obtained 29,830 votes in New Juaben South, while NDC candidate John Dramani Mahama polled 26,261 votes.
However, the NPP retained the parliamentary seat in 2024, with incumbent Michael Okyere Baafi securing 32,134 votes against the NDC’s Martin Otu Offei, who obtained 23,735 votes.
Mr. Amuzu said the progress made by the NDC in the constituency was the result of sustained grassroots mobilisation and hard work.
Using a football analogy, he compared his leadership to that of a UEFA Champions League-winning coach who had worked to strengthen the party and help bring the NDC to power, arguing that continuity was necessary.
He called for unity and renewed commitment among party members as the NDC prepares for the 2028 general election.
Mr. Dennis Mensah Akorli, who is also the Eastern Regional Director of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), said the constituency’s youth wing had become a strong organisational force under his leadership.
He attributed the development to efforts to mobilise young people and support the party’s activities, which he said contributed to the NDC’s performance in the 2024 elections.
Mr. Akorli further pointed to youth-focused programmes being implemented by the government and said continued implementation of such initiatives beyond 2028 would, in his view, benefit young people.
The NDC’s 2026 constituency executive election process opened nominations on September 15, with the nomination period ending on September 17.
Filing of nominations is scheduled for September 23 and 24, followed by vetting from September 25 to 27.
The appeals process is scheduled for September 29 to October 1, while constituency elections are expected to take place between October 24 and 25, 2026.
The two New Juaben South executives are seeking another term as the party begins preparations for its next electoral cycle.
