The Presidential Candidate of the Opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, Prof.Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang says the next NDC government will build the famous Asesewa Market to provide convenience to traders in the area.
“A Market Day at Asesewa” was a fabulous story in a basic school textbook read by many school children on the brisk trade activities on the market; however, the market continues to deteriorate.
Despite this, the Asesewa market remains the largest and most vibrant market in Upper Manya Krobo District where farmers from farming Communities such as Akateng and Sekesua, Odometa, Anyiboni, Akumesu, Akusu, Konkoney, Sisiamang, Otekpolu, among others transport their farm produce to sell.
Traders from Koforidua, Accra, Tema, Kasoa, and Ashiaman travel to buy from the farmers every market day -Monday and Friday.
Cassava, maize, tubers of yams, cocoyams, garden eggs, and other vegetables, cassava, and corn dough and livestock are in abundance every market day.
However, the lack of proper infrastructure forces these brisk trade activities to be conducted under harsh weather conditions. Market women sell under ramshackle sheds while others sell under umbrellas. The lack of basic amenities, such as access to flowing water, and poor sanitary conditions at the market worsen the plight of the traders.
Addressing a mini-rally at Asesewa in the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency on Monday, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC Prof. Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang said the NDC Manifesto has made provisions for the construction of modern market centers across the country to provide a conducive and hygienic environment for market women.
She said market women contribute immensely to the economic growth of the country, therefore, assured the next Mahama led government will construct the Asesewa Market and rehabilitate roads linking the farming Communities to the market for easy transportation of goods and services.
She also said the NDC will legalize Okada, provide free TVET education and apprenticeship to help the youth acquired vocational skills to make a living.
The Vice-Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Monday began a five-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region.
