The New Juaben South Municipal Health Directorate in Eastern Region has taken delivery of another batch of Covid-19 vaccines amidst increasing vaccine hesitancy.
The directorate is therefore urging residents qualified for both first and second dose to report at various posts to take their jabs.
“The New Juaben South Municipal Health Directorate wishes to inform the general public that the Service has taken delivery of some COVID-19 vaccines. Therefore the Ghana Health Service – New Juaben South Health Directorate is informing the public that; All eligible persons who took the COVID-19 Vaccination (Astrazeneca – 1st Dose) in September 2021 should visit the vaccination post for the 2nd Dose” Alfred Adomako Yeboah, Municipal Health Promotion Officer New Juaben South said in a statement issued Tuesday, November 23, 2021.
The statement also said “all eligible persons who have not yet taken their 1st Dose of any of approved Vaccines should visit the vaccination post (Health Facilities and Designated Post) for the vaccination. Vaccines are available in the Municipality, get vaccinated to protect yourself, the family, and community”.
Many residents are hesitating to be vaccinated in New Juaben South Municipality despite the availability of enough vaccines in various communities.
Ghana was the first country in the world to receive vaccines through COVAX in late February. The county has since received many vaccines however the high rate of vaccine hesitancy among the populace is affecting the government’s plan to vaccinate projected 20 million Ghanaians to achieve herd immunity
Research conducted by the Centre for Plant Medicine Research Mampong-Akuapem (CPMR), observed that out of 64.6 percent of the respondents sampled 33.2 percent either believed the vaccines were developed to harm people while 34.1 percent were not sure.
The study also revealed that only 35.4 percent of respondents believed the vaccines were not developed by some people to destroy others and a total of 683 respondents sampled, 15 percent had very little or no knowledge of the COVID-19 infection.
This he said, “Was pronounced among participants living in communities with low or no recorded infection”.
It further indicated that 30.6 percent of the respondents said they would not take the vaccine and 27.5 percent were undecided if allowed to vaccinate.
“Similarly, 46 percent of the respondents either believed the COVID-19 vaccine will not offer the desired protection 18.7 percent and 27.2 percent were not sure,” Dr. Kofi Donkor, the principal investigator of the study, said
