The New Juaben Municipal Crime Officer, Augustine Asante, has raised alarm over the increasing number of poisoning cases within the municipality, warning that criminals are increasingly resorting to the use of toxic substances to secretly eliminate their victims.
According to him, human exposure poisoning has become a preferred method for some perpetrators as it helps conceal criminal acts, especially when victims consume contaminated food, water, or drinks.
“One issue I want to bring to the notice of the public is poisoning. Due to the nature of our work, we have witnessed a lot of deaths. The rate of poisoning has become too much,” he stated.
He explained that criminals are now using highly potent chemicals, stating that in some cases, perpetrators only need to dip a finger into the substance to contaminate plates, spoons, water, or beverages, making the poison difficult to detect.
The Municipal Crime Officer therefore urged the public to remain extra cautious and vigilant, particularly when attending social gatherings such as parties, dinners, and public events.
“People must be very conscious of what they eat and drink, and from whom,” he cautioned.
The Municipal Crime officer made these remarks while addressing members of the Pentecost International Worship Center (PIWC), Koforidua, during a sensitisation engagement
Poisoning remains a major global public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unintentional poisoning caused 106,683 deaths worldwide in 2016, resulting in the loss of 6.3 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
In many countries, poisoning is among the leading causes of emergency hospital admissions.
Health experts stress that poisoning is a time-dependent medical emergency and often requires specialist intervention for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
