The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, Hon. Ransford Owusu Boakye, has emphasized that existing sanitation by-laws are sufficient if properly enforced, urging citizens to take personal responsibility in maintaining cleanliness.
Speaking in an interview on Bryt FM, Hon. Boakye noted that while the laws exist, enforcement should be balanced with engagement, since “it is human beings we are dealing with.”
He explained that he prefers dialogue with offenders, but where people refuse to comply, the law will be applied strictly.
He further revealed that his office, in collaboration with environmental officers and agencies, is intensifying efforts to improve sanitation before Christmas, with hopes of achieving significant progress by next year.
Hon. Boakye also expressed concern about institutions in the municipality that fail to keep their surroundings clean. He advised that instead of waiting for government to intervene, offices and businesses should take advantage of the monthly sanitation exercise day to tidy their premises, especially gutters and areas often littered with rubbish.
Public participation in these clean-up exercise has been on the low as the metropolis us yet to see the zeal from residents.
