A military court in Nigeria has convicted a former commander of the Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram after he appeared in a video on social media complaining of a lack of military equipment to fight the jihadists in the north-east of the country.
Local media is reporting that he was found guilty of violating military rules which prohibit sharing any information about military operations on social media.
The trial and conviction of Gen Olusegun Adeniyi followed an angry outburst he made in a video that went viral on social media.
In it he suggested that Boko Haram fighters were better equipped than the Nigerian military.
It was recorded in the field just after militants had killed dozens of soldiers in an ambush in Yobe state earlier this year.
A military spokesman confirmed that a military court had ordered the general to be demoted.
Nigerian troops have long complained of inadequate weapons as they fight a long-running insurgency by Boko Haram and its splinter faction.
In the latest devastating attack the militants killed dozens of farmers in Borno state on Saturday.
